Canada was to have a general election not earlier than October 20, but Carney wanted to take advantage of his exceptional popularity that had made him elected as the Liberal party leader and subsequently the Prime Minister. Mark Carney, newly appointed Prime Minister this month, on Sunday announced a snap election in Canada on April 28, seeking a strong mandate to counter the challenge posed to the economy by the 'unjustified' tariffs declared by US President Donald Trump.
Canada was to hold a general election not earlier than October 20, but Carney was eager to take advantage of his stunning popularity that saw him elected as the Liberal party leader and ultimately the Prime Minister, as Trump started making tariff threats against Canada and Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau resigned.
"There is much more work to do to keep Canada safe. To invest in Canada, to construct Canada, to bring Canadians together. That is why I am asking my fellow Canadians to give me a clear positive mandate.
I've just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and an election on April 28 and she has accepted," he stated at a news conference after his request for general elections was granted. Canada's Liberal government tasked Carney with fulfilling the task of countering the Trump threat through his experience as a two-time past central banker, although he had no experience in politics or election campaigns.
